Essential Tools for the aspiring Home Mountain Bike Mechanic

The Basics: Essential Tools Every Mountain Bike Garage Needs

For mountain bikers who wish to maintain their bikes efficiently, having the right set of tools is indispensable. If your budget does not allow for much, there are some basic kits you can buy that will allow you to do most things (maybe not as easily, but you can get by). An example kit is at the end of this article. If you have the budget and want to invest in higher quality tools, here are some more professional tools that will work as well depending on your desires and goals that I’ll cover in a future article.

Firstly, some simple inexpensive necessities to at least get you started. Mountain biking does have some barriers to entry up front, but once you are setup, it isn’t too expensive to keep doing.

A quality multi-tool is essential. This compact device usually includes various wrenches, screwdrivers, and even a chain breaker. Mountain bike repairs often require adjustments on the go, and a multi-tool ensures you the rider are equipped to address issues quickly. Whether it is tightening loose components or making minor adjustments before a ride, a multi-tool is indispensable. Crankbrothers is one that I’ve used for years in the shop and out on the trail and one that we sold a lot of. Their chain tool worked better than others I’ve tried. I’ve used other more basic multi tools as well, it just depends on how many tools you feel you want. Some of the Crank Brothers multi tools even come with a container that the tool fits in.

Tire levers are another critical item. You likely will at some point be removing your tire to replace or for some repair such as a broken spoke or rim re-tape. On the trail as many of you have experience, flat tires can occur unexpectedly on the trail, and having reliable tire levers simplifies the process of removing and replacing tires. Pedro’s have long been my favorite. They are super stiff and tough! Even in the shop environment (where they were used a lot) we only managed to break a few over the years on super difficult basically glued on tires…

In addition to these tools, a basic set of repair stands and a chain cleaning kit contribute to effective mountain bike maintenance. If you want to have a better biking experience and to avoid creating unnecessary problems for yourself, keep your bike clean! Especially your drivetrain.

Pairing your tire levers with a high-quality floor pump also helps but if your budget doesn’t allow, a portable hand pump will do just be prepared for a workout! If you do have a budget, get a small compressor as seating tires on the bead for tubeless setup is very difficult without some good forced air. A floor pump allows for efficient inflation of mountain bike tires to the recommended pressure, which is crucial for ensuring optimum performance and safety on varied terrain.

Repair stands facilitate easy access to the bike for adjustments and cleaning, while a chain cleaning kit ensures that the drivetrain remains in good condition, enhancing the bike’s performance and longevity.

This is just a very basic list of some things to get started. I’m sure I missed some, but I’ll have more articles about other tools I recommend if you want to get into actual repairs and upgrades and need to know what tools to get and what I recommend and have used.
